Surfing Camp

January 15, 2008 on 6:52 am | In Life | No Comments

I recently watched a YouTube video made by some teens that were at a Club Med with their parents. The facility advertises itself as a great family getaway and one of the big draws is a teen only hangout with things like a skate park. I don’t know what the rules are there, but these kids were bored enough to break them. The YouTube video showed them taking turns riding a sun bed down the half pipe in the dark. They sounded drunk or stoned.

I think that sending your kids to summer camps makes more sense then taking them with you and not supervising them. The surf camps that you can check out by visiting WBSurfCamp.com are a great option for adventurous kids. There are adult camps as well, it is something that I have always wanted to try.

We rode horses for about an hour a day at the only summer camp that I attended as a teen. I don’t know if surfing had been invented yet;)

As you would expect surf camp is typically located somewhere warm and beautiful. Picture places like Hawaii, Costa Rica and the Bahamas. If you are looking for an overnight camp that will give your kids confidence and be an experience of a lifetime, this is it. The surf lessons can be augmented with training in first aid and ocean safety. If someone finds out that surfing is their thing, they can even continue with instruction to become a certified surfing instructor.

Getting Insurance Quotes

January 14, 2008 on 3:39 pm | In Life | 1 Comment

InsuranceFinder.com provides Insurance Quotes comparisons for people looking for auto insurance quotes, health insurance quotes, life insurance quotes and home insurance quotes.

The main advantage of using a service like this is that insurance providers are competing for your business. I always used to get my car insurance from the local insurance cooperative. It was pretty much a non decision as my parents had always gone there. When I eventually moved to an area that was farther away from where I grew up, I had to shop around for insurance. This was before the Internet. I seem to remember having the feeling that they agents figured they had me once I walked in the door. Even if you would prefer to get your insurance from a local bricks and mortar outfit, it would still be due diligence to shop around for quotes before hand.

I have been even less choosy with my life insurance. I bought policies from the guy who came to my door selling it. Granted I knew him and I felt that I could trust him. But really, he is not competing on price. The huge company that he works for gives him a big commission so he will go out into the county and sell to people who aren’t hopping around. Where do you think they get that money from?

Diet Scams From Yesteryear

January 14, 2008 on 12:06 pm | In Life, Diet, Health | 3 Comments

The researchers at Snopes are unsure as to whether anyone ever sold pills containing tape worms as a fad diet. There are some old advertisements with this claim. Prior to the FDA, medicines did not always contain what they claimed to contain. Either way, it was certainly an inadvisable way to try to lose weight.

Another interesting story from Snopes, this one absolutely true…

Graham crackers are named after a nutty minister who advocated vegetarianism as a way to combat lust. He was of the opinion that being oversexed lead to all kinds of physical and mental deficiencies and increased infant mortality. Ironically, he was dead set against refined flour as well. Years after his death, commercially produced graham crackers containing refined wheat flour became very popular.

Honda Accessories

One way to help with your family budget and also the environment is to maintain a compact car for as many years as possible. Typically new cars get traded in after only a few years. I have an aunt who is both frugal and environmentally responsible. She drove the same Japanese compact car for 20 years. that might be more than you can expect from someone with a long daily commute. She lived downtown and mostly used the car for weekend trips and grocery shopping.

If you are going to try to maintain a car for a decade or more, you might as well do some research and figure out the best source for you replacement parts. Taking a car to a local garage and letting them source the parts for you every time you need maintenance or repairs is a costly mistake. The garage and the parts outlet are each getting a generous markup at your expense.

If you have a Honda, you should compare the prices of
Honda Parts
at HondaPartsWarehouse.com with what is available locally. I would guess that the difference between the local retail price for something like a half dozen oil filters would more than cover the shipping costs.

They are also a great resource for Honda Accessories. If you carpool, your friends would appreciate a rear cup holder. This site has very competitive prices on Genuine Honda OEM Parts. If you really want to make a commitment to get the most out of your car, using genuine parts and following maintenance schedules is important.

As far as the environment is concerned, you should try to get one of the new Civic Hybrids that are coming out.

A Quick Meal Idea

I know that a meal is a winner with the whole family when it gets a nickname. Jail slop is actually a generic name for a lots of concoctions that involve several items in a pan cut fine enough that the vegetablephobes decide to forgo the picking process. A new winner in the household is called purple. There are only two main ingredients in purple. One is red cabbage and the other is a spicy sausage. I brown the decased meat from 2-3 links in olive oil and then add a thinly sliced cabbage (or 1/2 of a large cabbage) and simmer on medium until the cabbage is softened. You may want to add salt, depending on the salt content of the sausage.

I received this badge after taking a quiz on StructuredSettlement-Quotes.com. That’s not the first place that you would go to look for a fun diversion, but there ya go. Structured Settlement Buyers pay lump sums to people who are the recipients of various types of annuities. StructuredSettlement-Quotes.com takes your information and comes back to you with a number of offers from buyers. They can also connect you with loans to fund lawsuits.

I don’t know if any of my ancestors have ever lived to be 100 years old. I honestly don’t think that I will either

Save on Printer Ink and Cartridges

January 11, 2008 on 6:15 pm | In Life, Money, Business | 1 Comment

It’s quite appropriate for me to be writing a post about printer ink cartridges this week. We have been trying to save money by buying those generic refill kits with the hypodermic needles and the syringes and the complicated instructions. I think yesterday was about the fifth time that I have done the procedure and I experienced a minor accident. I was using a new kit with a larger needle than the previous one. I had mistakenly assumed that the air inside the empty ink cartridge had some kind of escape route. As it turned out, I had been unwittingly loading an ink bomb with ink and highly pressurized air. The little black dots are very small. I think I managed to clean them all from the desk… and the wall… and my glasses

These kits are the cheapest of three options. Buying compatible cartridges is easier and you still save a lot when compared to brand name replacements. You get what you pay for to some extent. If you have a pricey all in one printer, you might not want to void your warranty.

InkjetDeal.info is a great site for finding deals on both brand name and compatible cartridges. I have a Canon Printer. The actual Canon cartridges are kinda pricey. InkjetDeal.info has links to stores that have lower prices for these and they also point to sites that sell compatible stuff at a fraction of the cost. Coupon codes for printer cartridges allow you to save even more.

Subliminal Messages

January 10, 2008 on 10:26 pm | In Life | 2 Comments

I just read on http://www.subliminal-cds.com/ that subliminal messages are commonly used in department stores in an effort to reduce theft. I am not sure how I feel about that. If subliminal messages can really influence behavior, what is to stop stores from telling you to buy more stuff that you don’t need? It is a slippery slope indeed.

I don’t see any problem with voluntarily using the power of subliminal messages to effect a change in your life. Maybe you want to quit smoking or lose weight. Maybe you want to shake that highly inconvenient fear of clowns. Whatever improvements you want to make, they probably have a suitable recording. You can save money by using the MP3 download option at Subliminal-CDs.com. Here is a randomly chosen sample MP3 of what you can expect.

Baiting Haters on YouTube

January 10, 2008 on 6:30 pm | In Media, Life, Internet | 1 Comment

Sarah Fights Back Against Rude You Tubers is an interesting phenomenon. A vlogger from Diet.com had received a lot of very rude comments on a previous video and she decided to highlight them and give the misanthropes the attention that they craved. The interesting thing was that she got a LOT of attention herself. The video was one of yesterday’s most watched videos. I actually don’t like the tone or the content of the video that got all the nasty comments. I worry sometimes about whether the YouTube generation will be able to carry out polite social discourse when they enter adult life.

Flashing Messages on your Computer Screen?

January 10, 2008 on 5:46 pm | In Life, Internet | 4 Comments

I am not talking about those flashing pink popups and banner ads that make you so mad that you could chew nails. There are subliminal messages that you can install on purpose on your computer. They are designed to work on your subconscious and effect positive change. If you go to http://www.subliminal-power.com/, you can choose from a vast array of these messages. With 120 subliminal programs containing a collective total of OVER 1500 AFFIRMATIONS, they probably have the message that you want to tell yourself. If they don’t, there is an admin panel that allows you to customize. A download version of this product costs $39.95. This kind of subliminal communication has been proven to be effective, they tried doing it at the movies back in the old days to sell more snackfood, unless that’s an urban legend. Anyway, broadcasting subliminal messages without the viewer’s consent is not legal in most places.
