Who is to Blame for Anorexia ?

December 28, 2007 on 7:49 pm | In Diet, Childcare, Internet, Health, Weight Loss |

Sorry about the baiting title. Anorexia is a mental illness and blame is probably the least useful thing in every case, although it is neck and neck with denial. I watched this PSA for the first time today. It is pretty extreme. It is pretty provocative. It is not pretty.

I think that the first line of defense should be regularly eating meals together with any child that you feel may be at risk. If reasonable efforts to encourage a healthy relationship with food are met with resistance and acting out, get professional help sooner rather than later.

  1. Wow! A very touching, scary and real look at the inner battle suffered by those with anorexia.

There shouldn’t have to be the choice of being an appropriate weight or being healthy. The two should come as a package deal. Too bad that in our struggle to be thin we forget the other part. The Kimkins diet doesn’t carry that combo. It is thin with a side of starvation.
Thank you for trying to spread the word on this dangerous WOE.
Wishing you the best in the New Year of 2008!

  2. Thank you for your attention to this issue, and to the therapeutic effect of family meals. People at risk for an eating disorder need the structure and the safety of loved ones and a safe ennvironment around food. Families are in a good position to spot problems, and take action to solve them, before things go too far.
