Are New Years Resolutions a Bad Idea?
December 31, 2007 on 2:56 pm | In Life, Weight Loss | 2 CommentsIt wasn’t hard for me to find an article to agree with my thought that New Years resolutions are a bad idea. More specifically, big life changes like significant weight loss or quiting smoking cannot be achieved by making some kind of vow on a specific date. Bold resolutions are a way of setting yourself up to fail.
If you feel some obligation to make a resolution, be specific and small. Resolve to go for a long walk one day a week. Resolve to leave the TV off for one night a week. If you are successful with a small resolution, you can use that to springboard to bigger things.
The Advantages Of Dealing With a Large Real Estate Group
December 30, 2007 on 9:22 pm | In Real Estate | 2 CommentsPrudential Douglas Elliman are not insulting our intelligence with their inclusion of Real Estate for Dummies content on their website. Anyone that has ever used a manual from that series knows that they do a great job of bringing you up to speed on a subject and not making any assumptions about prior knowledge. This valuable educational tool is provided as a courtesy by the largest Real Estate firm in the New York area.
If you are buying or selling property in NYC, or even if you are interested in Hamptons or North Fork real estate, Prudential Douglas Elliman are the people to go to. They have sixty offices serving 350 communities ranging from Big City Manhattan to quaint and quiet Montauk.
Relevance Does Not Equal Authority
December 30, 2007 on 8:57 pm | In Diet, Internet, Health, Weight Loss | No CommentsI just Googled the term ‘Fast Diet.’ This is something that a lot of people will do in January and the item at the top of the list is about the Cabbage Soup Diet. I would prefer to see something else at the top of the page, possibly something from a real authority on health care that provided some cautionary information to people who are looking for a quick fix with regard to their weight. I started down the list looking for something of value and it was kind of depressing. I had to settle for linking the words Cabbage Soup Diet to the Wikipedia entry that is critical of that ineffective and unpleasant fad diet.
Romance For Everyone
December 29, 2007 on 6:42 pm | In Life | 1 CommentI think we all like to keep a little romance in out live. RomanceForEveryone.com has plenty of romantic thoughts and letters to inspire those of us who are lucky enough to be with that special person to swivel our task chair 90 degrees and scooch over for a bit of kissing.
If you have been through a break up or you haven’t found that perfect person yet you should check out RomanceForEveryone.com. It is a wealth of free information. A lot of the information is geared towards people that are considering eHarmony. I managed to find my sweetie before eHarmony took off, but we were impressed by what we had heard about it. It’s great to see that there are sites offering advice and encouragement to people who are looking for love in one of the right places.
Limiting Coffee Intake
December 29, 2007 on 6:08 pm | In Coffee, Health | No CommentsCoffee is a friend to those of us who have to burn the midnight oil on occasion, but we all know that too much coffee is bad news for our health. How much is too much? There is a variation in sensitivity to caffeine. Some people find out that they are better off avoiding the stuff altogether.
A cup of coffee will typically contain 65-85mg of caffeine and health professionals caution against consuming more than 500-600mg. Since coffee isn’t the only source of dietary caffeine, it is important to take all your sources into account. This list of caffeine content in beverages from the Mayo Clinic says that Diet Coke has a lot more caffeine than Coke. A 12 ounce Diet Coke has 47mg of caffeine. Pregnant women should try to stay below 300mg per day. I saw some surprises on the list so you should really find out the caffeine content of any specialty drinks that you buy. ONE Starbucks Grande has more coffee than a pregnant woman should consume in a day.
Neat iPhone Accessories
December 28, 2007 on 8:20 pm | In Technology | 1 CommentI just saw a thread on a forum that I frequent asking people if there blogs looked good on an iPhone screen. I have no idea about mine. I haven’t done anything special with the template, so it might be a mess on the small screen of a hand held device. If anyone is ever looking at this blog using an iPhone, please let me know if it is readable.
Were you lucky enough to unwrap an iPhone this Christmas? Congratulations (you lucky #$%^$*).
You should consider wrapping it back up with an invisible protective coating from pdostore.com. They sell some great iphone accessories. Besides the unique and durable protective body shields, they also have well designed and stylish holsters and arm bands. If I had an iPhone, I would probably treat it very gently. My choice for an accessory would be the premium leather case from pdostore.com. I dropped my cheap phone on the floor earlier this year and it popped apart. A leather case would have prevented that.
Diet.com on YouTube: Haters Hate it
December 28, 2007 on 8:05 pm | In Exercise, Internet | 1 CommentIt is so sad that overweight people are considered to be such an easy target. There are enough haters on YouTube to go around, but fat people tend to get a disproportionate amount of attention. The promoters of Diet.com were wise to moderate all comments on their YouTube videos. When I first noticed this practice, I thought that it was kinda like censorship, but I have decided that it is justified after seeing some of the senseless comments on other videos. I made a positive comment on the video below and it is pending approval.
Who is to Blame for Anorexia ?
December 28, 2007 on 7:49 pm | In Diet, Childcare, Internet, Health, Weight Loss | 2 CommentsSorry about the baiting title. Anorexia is a mental illness and blame is probably the least useful thing in every case, although it is neck and neck with denial. I watched this PSA for the first time today. It is pretty extreme. It is pretty provocative. It is not pretty.
I think that the first line of defense should be regularly eating meals together with any child that you feel may be at risk. If reasonable efforts to encourage a healthy relationship with food are met with resistance and acting out, get professional help sooner rather than later.
Finding California Health Insurance
December 28, 2007 on 7:34 pm | In Health | No CommentsI did a quick bit of research and I was surprised to find out that there are groups of people in California that are motivated and mobilized in an effort to bring about universal health coverage. If this was successful, private insurance would become less important. The news story that I read has made it pretty clear that this scenario is highly unlikely. A federal judge has ruled against a city wide proposal that was put forth for San Francisco, so don’t hold your breath. Don’t put off getting a California health insurance quote either.
Using a website like Ca-insurancefinder.com allows you to get a California group health insurance quote from competing companies and you might save a lot of money. I am not certain about this, but it is my understanding that quotes for insurance and financial products are usually lower when they know that you are requesting through a service that is obtaining quotes from the competitor as well.
If you were to walk into the office of one insurance provider and request a quote on something like California Small Business Health Insurance, they might give you a higher quote because they are willing to take the chance that you will commit to them since you have gone to the trouble of showing up. I have known some shrewd people who can play local businesses off against each other to their faces and get the best deal. We are not all like that. I think the meek and polite people among us deserve a good deal just as much as the assertive and ballsy people. The service company that runs Ca-insurancefinder.com is not owned by any insurance company.
Kimkins is Selling Stuff
December 28, 2007 on 6:45 pm | In Money, Kimkins | 2 CommentsDo you want a BowFlex? How about a soup’n’salad storage unit? Impulse buyers should flock to the Kimkins blog, because she has tricked her blog out as an affiliate site for Amazon. I don’t fault her for it, and I have tried the Amazon aStore model myself. It has never paid me even a cent. I have never had a blog with traffic like Kimkins. Maybe she will make a bit of pocket money. I have a brother who owns a BowFlex and I though it was pretty cool.
